Student fundraiser
information package

Get a job that gives back

As a student fundraiser, you can help to improve the UBC student experience – for yourself and for your classmates – by connecting over the phone with thousands of alumni, friends of the university, and parents of current students.

Student fundraisers raise money for initiatives across campus including student scholarships and bursaries, research programs, laboratory equipment, student wellbeing, improvements to buildings and facilities, and more. They are important part of the UBC Development and Alumni Engagement team, which collectively raises over $200 million each year for UBC.

We’re looking for enthusiastic, confident, goal-oriented students to become student fundraisers. We’ll help you develop valuable career skills including customer service, negotiation, relationship building, interpersonal communication, decision-making and more. It’s a great opportunity to build upon your resume with in-demand career skills.

Student fundraisers start at an hourly wage of $17.75, with the possibility of an increase upon successful completion of probation. Fundraisers who meet their goals and perform well receive regular wage increases and can earn up to $26.15/hour.

The UBC Call Centre is conveniently located within the Wesbrook Building at the Vancouver Point Grey Campus.

Donations

Why does UBC need to fundraise?

This might surprise you, but your tuition fees only cover a fraction of the cost of your university education. Even if you’ve never received a scholarship or a bursary, donor support is still working behind the scenes to help improve and maintain the quality of your UBC education.

Donations account for approximately 10% of UBC’s annual income, and student fundraisers play a vital role in helping spread awareness about the importance of donating to UBC.

How does the
UBC Call Centre work?

The call centre operates within the Annual Giving unit, which is a team in UBC’s Development and Alumni Engagement office that focuses on soliciting small donations from many people, and growing the donor base for the university. Donors are mostly UBC alumni, parents of current students, and friends of the university. Most of our donations come through the mail, by email, or over the phone. Student fundraisers speak with alumni and ask for donations over the phone, using a computerized system that keeps records and automatically dials calls. Student fundraisers raise funds for faculties, schools, and departments across UBC – including UBC Okanagan. The money we raise is directed to specific funds within each faculty that directly support student scholarships and bursaries, lab equipment, facility upgrades, libraries, athletics, and other priority areas. Last year, the UBC Development & Alumni Engagement Office raised $200 million for the University. For its part, Annual Giving has an annual goal of $5 million, and student fundraisers are responsible for raising $1 million of this goal. Most gifts that come through the call centre range from a hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.

Commitment

Be an ambassador for UBC

Student fundraiser positions require extensive, ongoing training, and we require a minimum commitment of one full semester. If you intend to work for less than four months (one full semester), please do not apply for this position.

We provide all student fundraisers with a mandatory six hours of training before their first call and continue with ongoing support thereafter, so you will be fully prepared when you start connecting with donors at UBC.

Asking strangers for money is not something most of us do in everyday life and may take some getting used to. However, this work is significantly rewarding, both for the university and for your own personal confidence! “Making the ask” is a challenge, but once you succeed, it is a great skill to master.

Student fundraisers are also ambassadors for UBC and its students, because they formally represent the university to its alumni and other members of the community. Other expectations of the job include accurately capturing and updating alumni information, answering alumni questions or directing inquires to appropriate personnel, and building and maintaining great relationships between alumni and UBC.
