Patrick worked with me on a memorable and significant trial in which we sought damages for four men, abused as boys, at Arden Park, a facility funded and funded by the BC government. Dozens of boys, some juvenile delinquents, others just misfits, were sent to a wilderness camp where they were physically and sexually abused by the operator. Their complaints were ignored by social workers and probation officers. The trial was hard fought with the BC government denying liability, even though the operator of the facility had been convicted. Patrick came on to assist shortly before the trial, and worked hard to achieve justice for the plaintiffs. The evidence was challenging and profoundly upsetting for all involved. Working closely with Patrick was an excellent experience. He was committed, engaged and determined. He listened to the stories of the plaintiffs and witnesses heard the evidence of the damage inflicted upon them, and responded compassionately. He was a pleasure to work with, with his self-deprecating humour. He had a great laugh. He and my mother were both from Kamsack, Saskatchewan, a town whose lessons he worked hard to unlearn. Patrick cared deeply about the right things and had the courage to try to do the right things. He was among the best of our profession.
