About Aisha S. Uduman
Aisha Uduman was a vibrant and free-spirited individual who brought joy and creativity to everyone she met. Born on October 31, 1992 in Hong Kong, Aisha’s adventurous spirit was evident from a young age. She had an insatiable curiosity and a unique ability to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary.
Aisha’s academic journey took her to UBC, where she majored in Arts and later pursued a master’s degree in Forestry. She was one of the top graduate students in the UBC Wildlife Coexistence Lab in Forest Resources Management through which she conducted significant research on leopards in Sri Lanka. Aisha’s passion for the environment and her interdisciplinary approach to conservation were recognized and celebrated by her peers and mentors, including through several honours and awards.
Her dedication to wildlife conservation led Aisha to work at various organizations, including Parks Canada, the World Wildlife Fund and the Species at Risk Program at Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Her love for nature extended beyond her professional life. Aisha was deeply empathetic and dedicated to helping others, always putting their needs before her own. She adopted and cared for animals, and her compassion knew no bounds.
Aisha’s family and friends were her greatest treasure. She is remembered for her tight embraces, infectious enthusiasm and unwavering loyalty. Despite facing a devastating illness, diffuse midline glioma (DMG)—one of the most aggressive and debilitating forms of brain cancer—Aisha remained graceful and courageous, inspiring everyone around her with her resilience and strength.
Aisha passed away on February 19, 2024 at the age of 31. Her legacy lives on through the establishment of a UBC memorial fund created in her honour, as well as the Marine Education and Research Society naming a humpback whale “EYE-SHA.” Her memory will forever be cherished by her parents, Lalangi and Karl, along with her brothers, Dmitry and Viran, and her beloved partner, Elijah.
Thank you, Aisha, for the precious moments and the lasting impact you’ve left on our lives.
