About Christopher Charles

Christopher Douglas Charles was a passionate advocate and community builder. He was known for his deep kindness, spiritual grounding and unwavering commitment to equity—especially in Indigenous health, inclusive education and mental wellness.

Chris was set to graduate from the UBC School of Nursing in May 2025. In March, his life was tragically cut short just days before his 40th birthday. The loss of his bright and compassionate spirit has left a deep ache in the hearts of all who knew him.

As both a student and longtime staff member at the Indigenous Wellness Research Institute, Chris worked to ensure that all students—particularly those from historically marginalized communities—had equitable access to education. Drawing from his own experiences navigating barriers in the classroom and clinical spaces, he helped champion a project at UBC focused on making nursing education more accessible to all learning styles. His efforts supported tools and strategies that better serve visual, auditory, kinesthetic and neurodiverse learners.

  • Me and Chris met in person for the first time in 2018 at the Washington Park Arboretum. I'll never forget seeing him for the first time, all shy, all giggly, all beautiful inside and out, all him. We talked and talked, shared our life experiences, and connected our similar dreams. We knew how we were each other's one, and that evening was the beginning on our journey together in the world. We went on holding each other's hands through the weeks, months, and years. We learnt to expand our love for each other while running through the valleys, hiking up the mountain peaks, and relaxing at the beaches admiring the sunset's aura. We always stuck by each other's side through it all. One of the endless memories that I'll never forget, this one relates to the picture. Although Chris is busy looking at the beautiful sunset in the picture, he is also looking at me at the corner of his eye. We did this simple yet powerful gesture to each other whenever we were doing anything, to let each other know that we're here with each other, how we're connected with each other, how we love each other. It was something we always instinctively did. I deeply cherish every moment we ever had together, and I miss him so much.

  • Christopher knew at a young age he wanted to be in the medical field. After watching our Mother's journey with Rhuematoid Arthritis, one day he told her when he grew up, he was going to become a doctor so he could take care of her and find a cure for RA.
