Lynn was an exceptional doctor and mentor who cared deeply for her patients and her community. I feel extremely blessed to have worked with Lynn and learned from her wealth of knowledge in cardiology and palliative care. She led by example to advocate for good patient care, and shared invaluable wisdom for learners at UBC. She will be profoundly missed!

Lynn and I have been part of the same bookclub for over 15 years. Over the years we shared a lot of laughter, some tears, and had lively book discussions. Lynn is missed so much by all of us at bookclub. She always had great insight, suggested many fantastic books to read, provided delicious food for our potlucks, and always stood out with her compassion, warmth, and intellectual brilliance. She is very deeply missed and book club will never be the same without her.

I had the privilege of working alongside Lynn in palliative care, both at the Nancy Chan Clinic and in the community. It was an honour to witness her compassion, humility, and remarkable ability to connect with people during the most difficult moments of their lives. She was knowledgeable, steady, approachable, and deeply caring. I learned so much from her—especially her gift for speaking with people in an honest and open way, and for helping them truly understand the path before them. With Lynn as their doctor, you always felt that people were in the very best hands. She was also a devoted mother. Her love for her son and her sense of responsibility to him were always at the forefront of her life. Alongside her professionalism, she brought humour and lightness, and she was an incredible jam maker. Her absence in the palliative care world is felt every day, and I deeply miss her steady, caring presence.

Lynn had a way of looking at you and seeing a version of yourself you hadn’t met yet. She didn’t just offer encouragement; she offered a steady, unwavering belief that acted as a bridge until you could stand on your own. I am a better clinician today because she chose to see my potential before I had the confidence to see it myself. She was a builder—of better systems, but more importantly, of people. She invited people into her vision with a warmth that made the daunting path feel like possible. When life felt heavy, she always made time to listen and offer support. Her passion was the heartbeat of our work, and her absence has left a space that simply cannot be filled She is dearly missed

Lynn was an incredible physician, colleague, mentor and friend. She was kind, patient and despite her significant achievements was down to earth and humble. She was generous with her time and her knowledge and provided a lot of support for me as a new physician. Lynn was passionate about improving patient care and her work was instrumental in shaping the greater palliative care community. Lynn was also strong, brave and fun. I miss her a lot as a friend and miss working alongside her. She will also be an inspiring person in my life and I am forever grateful to have known her.

I had the privilege of working with Dr. Straatman for three years at Pacific Spirit Community Health Centre in palliative care. She was far more than a colleague. She was a mentor, a steady presence, and someone I was fortunate to call a friend. Dr. Straatman had a remarkable ability to truly see people. She took the time to learn about everyone she worked with. She took a genuine interest in getting to know me and my coworkers. She had a phenomenal memory and ability to recall peoples’ goals, passions, strengths, and what mattered to them. She always made herself available to offer guidance and support. Her kindness, humility, and dedication to her patients and team left a lasting impression on all of us. Her impact continues to be felt. My workplace is not and will never be the same without her there. It is an honour to contribute to a fund that reflects the compassion and excellence she brought to her work every day.

I will always remember Lynn’s spirit, humor, intellect, compassion, courage and love for everyone around her. Although I never got the chance to say goodbye to such a beautiful treasure of a person, I will always hold Lynn in a special place in my heart. Rest in peace our dearest friend, colleague and teacher. Thank you for making our world a better, brighter and kinder place.
