About Graeme Barnes

Graeme Barnes was born in Nanaimo, BC and raised on the oceanfront in Ladysmith. He graduated from Ladysmith High School and Malaspina University College.

Graeme had a magnetic personality and gentle soul; he made friends easily. He loved to travel, became an outdoor enthusiast and took up scuba diving, wakeboarding, surfing, snowboarding, golfing, tennis, fishing, hunting and camping.

Graeme’s passion for the ocean was reflective of his 20 years with BC Ferries, where he rose to the position of Second Officer. Other experiences included time with the Canadian Coast Guard, Victoria Habour Patrol and International Vessel Delivery.

Graeme leaves behind his beloved son Quinton, his brothers Scott (Darby) and Andrew (Tamara), his nephews and niece (Cooper, Emmett, Alexander, Annabelle), his parents Randy and Sheila and his Aunt Nancy (Jeanne).

  • Saddened to hear of your passing Graeme. From the Davis Road days to lacing up cleats for soccer at LSS, you were lighthearted and quite often had a smile on your face. I always thought of you as a stand up, happy-go-lucky guy, and that’s how I’ll remember you. My thoughts go out to your family and friends.

  • His memory will live on with those who he connected with, in a way that so many of us wish we connect with others. He was outgoing, witty, caring, and adventurous. We had countless memories together that I will cherish forever. I love you Graeme.

  • Graeme never stopped striving to be better. His commitment to seeking peace, happiness, love, and connection is remarkable. He was kind, gentle, and deeply humble. He was a curious person, always seeking and being open to new ideas. He was open to possibilities and ideas with an open mindedness that many of us lack. Despite an accomplished career with BC Ferries, performing as a musician, and going on many adventures from fishing to hunting to surfing to motorcycling to golfing, Graeme was the last person to ever seek the spotlight or brag about his accomplishments (even though he had a lot to be proud of!) We wish Graeme had been able to see himself in life the way everyone keeps describing him: kind, gentle, caring, fun-loving. Graeme left us too early and our hope is that his story can help others heal.
