About Jan Christoffersen

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear partner, father and friend, Jan Erik Christoffersen on the morning of September 7th, 2025, in White Rock, BC. He passed away after a brave battle with cancer at 81 years old, surrounded by loved ones. Jan was a leap year baby born on February 29, 1944, in Glasgow, Scotland, to his parents Halvard and Marion. He is survived by his partner Andrea, his children Marnie, Andrew (Denise, granddaughter Elara), Alan and Lauren, their mother Rosemary, his siblings Elizabeth and Neil (Cheryl), his nieces and nephews Kris, Erik, Catherine and Mark, and his best friend Rick.

Jan grew up in Port Credit, Ontario after his family emigrated from Scotland. He graduated with a B.Sc. in Geology from the U of T in 1968, received his P.Eng designation in 1986 and earned his MBA from UBC in 1989. Jan’s extensive career in exploration geology took him to 72 different countries over 50+ years. He loved his work, especially his time in Ireland, England and Mexico. His other passions were spending time with family and friends, and on the golf course enjoying the game—making sure everyone’s strokes were accounted for. He recorded three hole-in-ones, a testament to his skill or to the sheer number of rounds he played. He was an avid crossword puzzle enthusiast, and was always up for a good debate. He will be deeply missed.

The impact of your support

To celebrate Jan’s life, his family is establishing the Jan Christoffersen Memorial Fund at UBC. It is the family’s wish to raise $65,000 to establish an endowment in Jan’s honour. Your gift will pay tribute to Jan’s life by supporting students in geology within the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at UBC. Final decisions on the area of support will be made by UBC in consultation with the family.

Thank you for your generosity in memory of Jan E. Christoffersen.

  • I met Jan back in early 1989 when he was President and CEO of Pass Lake Resources. Henry Awmack and I had recently started Equity Engineering and, like all new consulting companies, we needed work. Jan listened to our ideas for acquiring a number of exploration targets in the Galore Creek area of NW BC and soon became our largest client. He was the perfect client, providing encouragement and support when we struggled. Whether playing hockey or meeting up at the KEG, time spent with Jan was something I always looked forward to. I miss Jan, like so many others, from our close knit fraternity.

  • I had the pleasure of working with Jan at International Curator and I have so many great memories from those years. The loonie toonie parties at the taxpayer, enjoying listening to Blue Rodeo / Andrea Bocceli in the office, or the many dinners shared with him and Andrea over the years. I always loved getting a laugh out of him and I’m so happy that we were able to have a more recent visit. Jan will always have a special place in my heart and will be missed dearly.

  • I first met Jan in 1967 when we were both working for Amax Exploration in North Central BC. Over time, we established a long-lasting friendship as well as a working relationship with International Curator and Canadian Gold Hunter. Velvet threw a surprise party for my 40th birthday and Jan was the surprise guest. Since that time, our families have shared many memories at family get togethers and on ski trips to Whistler and Silver Star. Jan was one of the best geologists that I have ever known. He was also a compassionate boss and was loved by his employees. He didn’t let his ego get in the way. I will miss daily discussions with Jan on geology, politics, global warming, sports and of course the junior mining market. He was an avid golfer and I was there for all three of his holes in one. Unfortunately, he wasn’t there for any of mine because, I never got one. Velvet and I will miss his warm friendship and generosity. He will be sorely missed.

  • I never knew Jan very well however we recently enjoyed a tremendous visit at the same time in Big White where we both doted on dear sweet Elara. We talked about many things and I left feeling I had known him a long time and looking forward to the next time. Sadly, that is not to be. May all family and friends treasure the memories and stories. Jan lived a full and adventurous life and I know he will be missed. XOXOXO

  • If there were ever a blood test that could reveal a true geologist—and the devotion of a loving father—Jan would have tested positive for both. I had the great pleasure and privilege of working alongside Jan on the Boleo project in Santa Rosalía, Baja California—a whale of a project and an unforgettable adventure that shaped us in ways that only that green desert could. Over the years, we stayed in touch through the occasional email, those small but meaningful check-ins always carried his warmth and love of life. Jan had a generous heart, a sharp, curious mind, and a gift of observing what others did not see. He had this grounding presence—steady and kind— and his friendship true and genuine. I know he will be deeply missed—by his family, his friends, and, of course, by Andrea.

  • I was privileged to have known Jan. He was intelligent yet humble, generous in quiet ways, and deeply devoted to his family. Having Jan and Andrea join our festivities was something we looked forward to every Christmas. They added so much joy and laughter to our dinner table. From my conversations with Jan, I can tell you what he held very dear to his heart: golfing, spending time with his granddaughter Elara, and eating my Moroccan dry brined Christmas turkey (not necessarily in this order.) Jan certainly made his mark in our lives and he will be missed today, next year, and much longer in the future.

  • Loved to golf with Jan. Even if he wasn't having his best game there was aways Wolf. I will cherish many great memories on the golf course with "Juan".

  • Many memories of Jan, both in the field (Mexico, B.C.) and informally. Will always remember the "loonie/toonie" party at the Jolly Taxpayer.

  • I had the honour of being introduced to Jan through an associate only 2 years ago. Although we got to know each over a short period of time, a bond developed between us and I really looked forward to his morning phone call. Being an Investment Advisor our talks usually centered on small cap mining companies (with a side bar on where he was golfing that day). Jan knew mining inside out and I learned so much from him. There is a real void in my mornings now that I don't get that morning call. Jan was a real gentleman and I will miss him. My thoughts are with Andrea and Andrew, who I got to know over the past few months during a difficult time. Rest in Peace Jan.

  • Many great times on the golf course.

  • Jan gave me 30 years of memories, each one of which I've been re-living in vivid detail these last days, but I find myself gravitating to the more recent ones until in my mind I'm suddenly watching him again on the video phone with his granddaughter and hearing him tell her "be good to you"... Then later, as he's beginning to fade away and his children are there and singing to him, and I see him watching them, listening to them, and he's in such a peaceful place while we surround him. Jan was many things, accomplished many things, liked and loved many things - but he was always gracious and strong and genuine and I won't let him go for another 30 years.
