It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Knute Soros. Predeceased by his wife, Audrey, in their 60th year of marriage. Survived by his two sons, Kirk (Kathy), Ross (Barbara) and three grandchildren, Jake, Kelly and Robert. Left to remember him are four sisters, Borgany, Nora, Swanhild and Betty Ann as well as his in-laws Douglas (Nona) and Morley (Gerry).

Knute attended UBC and attained his degree in Civil Engineering. He was a founder of the University of BC Civil 1949 Bursary award and celebrated his 66th reunion with his fellow UBC alumni earlier this year. After serving with the Royal Canadian Navy, Knute worked for the city of New Westminster, Columbia Sash & Door and BC Engineering. He rounded off his career as a GIS Inspector associated with ALMAC BC.

His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He had the greatest friends and best times in life. He loved to gather around a table with good food and great wine. He was a great husband, father, grandfather and friend, who will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Skoal!

The University of BC Civil 1949 Bursary award was made possible by Knute Soros and fellow members of the Graduating Class of Civil Engineers 1949. It was created in celebration of their 60th anniversary, in memory of a unique mix of students, many of whom were veterans who had recently returned to civilian life following the end of World War II.

The Civil Class of 1949 maintained a strong bond that resulted in frequent and ongoing contact with and support of UBC. Your gift to the bursary award that Knute helped to found, will be a fitting tribute to his life and contributions to UBC Civil Engineering. You will help give students in financial need the latitude to focus on their studies instead of worrying about accumulating debt, and to become more engaged in the transformative learning experiences that the university provides Thank you.
