About Larry Henkelman

Surrounded by family at home in Gold River with the sound of the river and his trusted black Labrador close by, Larry died Monday, March 21, 2022.

Larry moved to Gold River in 1975 to work for Tahsis Company after graduating from the UBC Faculty of Forestry’s tight-knit class of ’75 with his BSF. He completed his Masters of Forestry in Operations Research at UBC in 1978. Larry worked at Gold River Logging Division through company changes from Tahsis Co., CIP, CPFP, Pacific, and finally, Western Forest Products until 2021.

Larry was involved with BC timber appraisals for over 40 years and was a founding member of the Coast Appraisal Advisory Committee (CAAC) now called the Coast Timber Pricing Advisory Committee (CTPAC). He was a valued member of several other committees, including Chair of the Coast Forest Products Association Timber Pricing Committee and Co-Chair of the Coast MPS Technical Subcommittee. Larry was a champion in timber appraisals and was an advisor and mentor to many students, industry, woodlot, and government colleagues. His passion and dedication to forest management and timber pricing helped develop a mathematical based defensible stumpage equation under the market pricing system for the coast of British Columbia. His strong professional ethics, interpretation of legislation, and defense of the system helped develop legal precedents and a legacy for future forest professionals.

With his wife Ann, he made a home in Gold River with their daughters, Erika (Doug, Ainsley, Aisha) and Sarah (Dave, John, Thomas).

Larry loved spending time outdoors. He fished Nootka Sound, rivers around Gold River, and Interior lakes, as well as hunted birds in the Cariboo each September. Larry helped launch the Gold River Golf Club, providing engineering expertise in planning and laying out the course. Over the years, he enjoyed running hockey and golf pools, curling and coaching juniors, playing and managing slow pitch teams, and golfing.
