About Mateja Clifford
Mateja Louise Pepevnak Clifford’s family, friends and communities are heartbroken following her tragic death near Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), British Columbia, in May 2025.
Mateja (UBC Mechanical Engineering Class of 2025) was an avid outdoorsperson, an unapologetic champion for women in science and deeply passionate about improving injury prevention approaches for women. She had just completed her Bachelor of Applied Science and was preparing to begin graduate research focused on female seatbelt biomechanics when she died.
Mateja was a brilliant student shaped by a remarkable breadth and depth of life experiences. Her unique perspective sparked research questions that aimed to better represent women and advance more inclusive scientific solutions. One faculty member noted that Mateja’s ability to ask questions that others had not even considered brought a vital and much-needed lens to her field.
Equally, she was a brilliant individual. Mateja wasn’t one to leave a rock unturned. Whether she was highlining, rock climbing, exploring new places, joining a club or simply being outdoors, she was an avid adventurer who lived a rich life full of exploration. Fueled by curiosity, Mateja’s vibrancy deeply impacted everything she touched—in her communities and beyond. She is remembered with great admiration by her professors, peers and research mentors, who saw in her a rare combination of intellectual strength, compassion and drive.

Donations to the Mateja Louise Pepevnak Clifford Memorial Fund will celebrate Mateja’s passion for learning and engineering. It is the family’s wish to establish an endowment to honour Mateja’s life by supporting students studying engineering at UBC. UBC will finalize the terms of the fund in consultation with the family.
