About Millie Kermode
Milena B. Kermode, lovingly known to many as Millie, lived a life rooted in dedication to education, growing through care and blooming in the warmth of community and family. Born in Vancouver and raised in Nanaimo as the eldest of six children, Millie’s passion for teaching was evident from an early age. After completing her Normal School training, she taught in classrooms across Nanaimo and Vancouver. Millie earned her Bachelor of Education from UBC while teaching at Kerrisdale Elementary School, where she inspired and mentored many young students—all while gracefully balancing the demands of raising a family.
Millie’s commitment to learning and nature continued long after her retirement from teaching. She devoted her time as a volunteer at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, Nitobe Memorial Garden and as a member of the UBC Botanical Garden’s Friends of the Garden. Her love for gardening and travel was reflected in the time and effort she put into nurturing her own garden and exploring gardens abroad.
Millie’s love for gardens, both at home and in the community, reflected the same caring spirit she brought to her family and friends. Whether hosting gatherings under the warmth of Maui’s sun, engaging in spirited tennis matches across generations or sharing meals filled with love and laughter, she created lasting connections with those around her. Her kindness, energy and generosity helped nurture and grow the communities and relationships around her, leaving behind a meaningful, lifelong legacy.
