About Norah Gibson

Norah Gibson passed away peacefully on February 20, 2019 in her 91st year. She is survived by Sam, her husband of the past 67 years.

Norah will be remembered for many things including her love for nature, flowers and for being a Friend of the Garden (FOG), a valued volunteer for UBC Botanical Garden. Norah really enjoyed the fellowship with other FOGs. Her amazing memory for all the botanical plant names, a result of her university studies in botany and Latin, alongside her medical training, came in handy when it came to cataloguing plants in the garden.

Messages of Remembrance

  • So many happy memories of working with Norah at UBC Botanical Garden. Particularly the happy time when I took a group of FOGs to Greece to see the wildflowers Norah and Sam came along, it was true celebration of spring with good friends. Norah had great fun keeping us on our toes when plant names couldn't be remembered . We all would carefully write down the name she gave followed by her wonderful laugh as she watched us all carefully write it down. She of course had carefully made the name up !!! Those of us who encountered Norah in our lives were indeed so fortunate.
