The Deepak Binning Foundation Community Builder Scholarship Fund

The Deepak Binning Foundation Community Builder Scholarship Fund is awarded to students applying to UBCO from high schools throughout the Southern Interior of B.C. Students are selected based on their academic merit, leadership and community service experience. This award was established by Paul and Jasbir Binning, in memory of their son Deepak who was diagnosed with cancer while he was in high school and died shortly after at the age of 19.

About the Donor

At a young age, Deepak Binning became passionate about playing the dhol, a traditional Indian drum. He played for many well-known Indian artists and even went on tour. When Dapeek died, his parents created the Deepak Binning Foundation in his memory and in 2007, the Foundation endowed a scholarship fund for incoming UBCO students.

“In my culture, we mourn our loss, however in our case we celebrated Dapeek’s life, as he had accomplished a lot,” says Paul. “If this scholarship can make a difference in one kid’s life, we will have done a good thing.”

Like Deepak, Paul also has many musical talents. In 1970 he was instrumental in forming the Punjabi Arts Association of Richmond, a group that has performed for Prime Ministers and at the Olympics.
