Professor Mo Steinberg Memorial Award in English Literature

The Professor Mo Steinberg Memorial Award is presented to a student in the department of English Language & Literature who exemplifies academic excellence and the attributes of good citizenship. This award was established in memory of Dr. Moses “Mo” Wolfe Steinberg, who enjoyed a 52-year tenure at UBC and helped shape the university’s literature department.

About the Donor

The award was created by Dr. Steinberg’s family and friends after his passing. His wife Esther Steinberg says her late husband had a passion for supporting students and was seen as a powerful teacher. “When he stayed in his office, his door was slightly open—not closed,” says Esther. “He would leave it open to talk to students. He enjoyed his career very much and wanted to give something back.”

Dr. Steinberg also served on the Senate and the Board of Governors, and co-authored Disciplines and Discovery which set new directions for UBC. Esther is hopeful this award will make university more fulfilling for recipients. “Perhaps it will ease them a little bit from having to take full time jobs,” she says. “It’s a financial help, so they can enjoy their studies more.”

For a mentor who helped so many students enjoy their time at UBC, the Professor Mo Steinberg Memorial Award is a fitting and inspirational tribute.
