With a history spanning over a century, UBC Thunderbirds Cross Country/Track & Field teams have consistently demonstrated unparalleled commitment and success.
UBC Athletics’ new fundraising initiative Back the ‘Birds played a pivotal role in sustaining and elevating the program. Last year’s inaugural event saw the track and field team emerge as the leading recipient of donations, raising over $58,000.
The strategic approach of the team’s 80 athletes and their networks was instrumental in this achievement—as Thunderbirds Track and Field athlete Olivia Lundman explains.
“Last year’s impressive total was a testament to our team’s commitment to our goals—whether that’s an athletic goal or fundraising goal,” says Olivia. “We are competitive athletes, and we strive to always do our best, both on and off the track. And field.”
The funds raised had a tangible impact on the team’s operations and opportunities. “We’ve been able to take our talented athletes to some of our California-based track meets,” says head coach Laurier Primeau.
In the past year, the Thunderbirds have celebrated remarkable achievements: the women’s track and field team clinched the national championship for the second consecutive year with the men’s team securing third place.
Now some of the Thunderbirds are going to the Olympics—including Olivia.
“Competing for Canada at the Paris Olympics is truly a dream come true!” says Olivia. “The support from my friends, family, and the entire Thunderbirds community has been instrumental in my journey.”
For Olivia, the benefits of being a UBC Thunderbird extend beyond athletic prowess.
“Being a Thunderbirds Track and Field student-athlete has profoundly shaped my time at UBC. It has provided me with an incredible community of fellow athletes, coaches, and support staff who help me to achieve my best.” She adds: “My rigorous training has instilled discipline, resilience, and a strong work ethic in me—which have been invaluable in both my academic and personal life.”
This off-the-field excellence had the Thunderbirds Cross Country/Track and Field teams rank first, second, third, and fourth academically among UBC’s 27 varsity teams.
“These athletes who are demonstrating incredible success in the competitive environment are also just crushing it in the classroom—and I think that’s incredibly important,” says Laurier.
After the Olympics, the Thunderbirds Cross Country/Track & Field teams will gear up again for Back the ‘Birds on September 17—with the collective effort of the team, coaches, and community a testament to the impact of donor support.
“Our success is a direct result of their giving,” says Laurier.
Olivia agrees and has these words for donors: “By backing the ‘birds you are giving athletes the opportunities to succeed, while fostering a community!
She adds: “Supporting Thunderbird teams is an investment in the future.”
