Giving Day donors help CampOUT! empower a new generation

15 years on from the first camp, donors help create something truly extraordinary for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth.

Imagine standing amidst the lush wilderness of Gambier Island, where the laughter and stories of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth echo through the trees. For four unforgettable days and three nights, CampOUT! transforms these young lives, offering a leadership experience that goes far beyond the traditional summer camp.

“CampOUT! radically changed my life,” shares one camper. “I didn’t know that a future of being queer and trans was possible for me. I felt more authentic and celebrated in myself than I could have ever imagined.”

This is the magic of CampOUT!—a program dedicated to equipping youth with skills, networks, and a profound sense of belonging. Every year, thanks to the generosity of donors, this life-changing opportunity is offered at no cost to families.

Since its inception 15 years ago as a UBC research project, CampOUT! has blossomed into a powerful, donor-supported program that has welcomed over 1,000 participants. Each year, nearly 200 youth apply for one of just 70 coveted spots, underscoring the program’s vital impact.

“From the start, we wanted CampOUT! to be as accessible as possible,” explains Fred Lee, Senior Director, Alumni Engagement and Fundraising Chair, CampOUT! “That means covering all costs for participants, from transportation to meals, and creating a safe, inclusive environment where every camper feels supported.”

CampOUT! owes its success to the unwavering support of donors. On UBC’s Giving Day, the program has become a flagship cause for the Faculty of Education, raising over $30,000 last year toward its $150,000 annual budget.

“Giving Day is not just about raising funds—it’s also about raising awareness,” says Fred. “Every gift, big or small, helps amplify our impact and brings new supporters into the CampOUT! family.”

Challenge donors like Darcy Greiner and Joel Smith played a vital role in inspiring support for CampOUT! on UBC Giving Day, April 4, 2024. Through their Fairy/Faerie Godparent Challenge, they pledged a $5,000 gift unlocked when ten donors contributed $250 or more via the Giving Day website.

Their challenge was not only met but exceeded.

Seventeen donors rose to the challenge with gifts of $250 or more, bringing in a total of $6,050 for CampOUT!—a powerful example of how challenge gifts can amplify fundraising success.

“Their support inspires others to give, creating a ripple effect that reaches far beyond the camp itself,” Fred says. Corporate allies like Scotiabank have also bolstered the program with financial backing and donor appreciation events, spreading the word about CampOUT!.

As CampOUT! approaches its 16th year, the vision for the future grows bolder. Plans are underway to expand the camp’s curriculum and reconnect with alumni who are now leaders in their communities.

“Our alumni are living proof of CampOUT!’s transformative impact,” Fred notes. “They return to their communities equipped with confidence, leadership skills, and a support network that stays with them for life.”

By supporting CampOUT!, donors aren’t just funding a camp—they’re investing in a movement.

“When you support CampOUT!, you’re investing in a future where every young person feels seen, celebrated, and capable of leading change,” says Fred.

With Giving Day 2025 on the horizon, CampOUT!’s team is rallying to inspire even greater support.

“We’re thrilled to have such a strong community behind us,” Fred says. “Together, we’re creating something truly extraordinary.”

Support CampOUT! and empower 2SLGBTQIA+ youth with the tools they need to thrive.
