On Giving Day, donors accelerate innovation at OK Motorsports

With the help of donors, OK Motorsports continues to push boundaries in student-led engineering—with both gas and electric cars.

Gripping the steering wheel of a cutting-edge electric race car, designed and built by the UBC Okanagan students of OK Motorsports, you feel the adrenaline surge through your veins. With every carousel and chicane, you experience the thrill of high-performance racing, where innovation seamlessly merges with excitement.

For OK Motorsports, their drive to succeed is ignited by passion, determination—and the generous support of donors.

What began in 2013 as a small group of UBC Okanagan students has grown into a team of over 160, determined to compete at the highest level of motorsports innovation. With donor support, the team is now taking on the challenge of building its first electric vehicle (EV). But it’s not just about building cars; it’s about shaping future engineers and leaders. The hands-on experience students gain from designing and building racecars directly translates into practical skills for their careers. OK Motorsports helps students develop technical skills and provides leadership experience, both of which are crucial for future success.

“It’s not just about the cars—it’s about developing project management, teamwork, and real-world problem-solving skills,” explains Mary Bates, management director of OK Motorsports. “Every student is working on something that will end up on the car, and together, we make it all happen.”

On UBC Okanagan’s Giving Day last year, OK Motorsports raised over $23,500, thanks to a coordinated effort from the team’s leadership and members. The funds raised were pivotal in supporting the team’s new focus on an electric car. Mary, along with the sponsorships and PR teams, reached out to engineering companies in Kelowna, alumni, and friends, encouraging them to donate.

“Even when people donated just a small amount, it made a huge impact,” she says. “The challenges, like the matching donation incentives, really pushed people to give.”

As the team prepares for the 2025 season, their confidence is fueled by the support of donors. The team’s growth, along with its exciting plans for the future, depend upon it. Mary looks forward to the upcoming Giving Day, with a renewed focus on winning the challenges that drive their funding.

“Giving Day is crucial for us,” says Mary. “It’s what enables us to build, innovate, and compete. We’re incredibly grateful for the generosity that keeps this program moving forward.”

“We’re aiming to be the top performing fund this year,” she says, with a competitive spark. “And with the continued support of donors, we’re going to take OK Motorsports to new heights.”
