With the UBC Thunderbirds’ win at the 2023 U Sports Women’s Soccer Championship, coach Jesse Symons is not prone to understatement when describing the team—especially when it’s well-deserved.

“The Thunderbirds Women’s Soccer team is a collective force of exceptional young women who come together to compete at the highest level for their school,” says Coach Symons. “It’s not just about winning championships but instilling qualities that will benefit them in various aspects of life, fostering teamwork, resilience, and leadership.”

Coach Symons acknowledges the dual advantage of being a UBC Thunderbird student-athlete.

“It’s definitely a coveted position, and I think a lot of the players look at it as a privilege,” he says. “Getting a world-class degree and playing on a top team that competes for the school to win national championships year after year is something to be proud of.”

Discussing the impact of last September’s Back the ‘Birds—a 24-hour day of giving dedicated to helping UBC student-athletes—Coach Symons emphasizes its power to transform the Women’s Soccer team and level the playing field.

“Back the ‘Birds has been very successful for us because of the proactive outreach of our players. They pick up the phone, look through their phone directory, and text someone, and those people will give to them. Their outreach has been quite proactive on the day and supported by individuals. Their texts are not ignored.”

According to Coach Symons, that teamwork behind the scenes scored impressive results.

“Back the ‘Birds has shifted and transformed our program, raising over $26,000 last year. Donor support allows us to embark on more trips, purchase additional equipment, and provide academic support through tutoring services,” Coach Symons adds, “It’s allowed us to be a holistic program, adding extra value to an already very talented group of individuals.”

Reflecting on the team’s global impact, Coach Symons notes, “We’ve been fortunate to have players venture into professional soccer worldwide, from Europe to Australia and South America. Our program serves as a springboard for these talented individuals to showcase their skills on the international stage.”

Like any sport momentum is key—especially for fundraising during Back the ‘Birds. For donors, Coach Symons urges them to actively participate and generate excitement for the team—emphasizing that their contribution amount is secondary to their collective enthusiasm.

“The more that individuals are willing to give and support, the more excitement around why people give and what they’re giving to. Regardless of size, your gift can help tell a compelling story and inspire others to contribute.”

Back the ‘Birds has been a crucial factor in the continued success of the Thunderbirds Women’s Soccer team. With the support of donors, the team has not only achieved championship athletic wins but also transformed into a program that nurtures well-rounded individuals ready to make a positive impact—on and off the field.

Back the ‘Birds is your chance to rally behind a team and give your support to our talented, high-achieving student-athletes and incredible programs.
