Since 2005, UBC Okanagan and the Okanagan Nation have worked in partnership to enhance education and support Okanagan Indigenous culture, history, language, philosophy and knowledge. UBC’s Okanagan campus was founded in partnership with local Indigenous peoples, the Syilx Okanagan Nation. The university’s warm welcome in Syilx Okanagan territory was reciprocated with a pledge to build long-term, collaborative relations. Programs and curriculum have been built on this foundation.
The Indigenous Centre, provides a sense of belonging and community to more than 500 students at UBC Okanagan. This home away from home is committed to enriching the quality of the student experience for Indigenous students by promoting access, providing capacity building opportunities, and celebrating success. The Indigenous Centre has a team of Indigenous peer mentors and tutors, acting as a home base for all Indigenous students on campus. It offers many unique amenities and provides a safe and comfortable space for academic study, social interaction, and cultural experiences.
UBC Okanagan continues to work with Indigenous communities and other partners in exploring new ways of enhancing opportunities for Indigenous student success.
