Indigenous initiatives and UBC

Help advance Indigenous peoples' human rights

About these initiatives

In September 2020, UBC launched the Indigenous Strategic Plan and became the first university in North America to commit to implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

The Indigenous Strategic Plan outlines eight goals and 43 actions the university will collectively take to advance Indigenous peoples’ human rights, including:

  • Goal 2: Advocating for truth—Facilitate open dialogue about truth, reconciliation and the recognition of the Indigenous peoples’ human rights.
  • Goal 8: Creating a holistic system of support—Provide exceptional and culturally supportive services for Indigenous students, faculty, staff and communities

Your gift to the priority funds below will make a difference in reconciliation and the university’s work to advance Indigenous peoples’ human rights.

Support awards for Indigenous students

The Centennial Scholars Award program assists academically qualified undergraduate students who show an interest in joining and contributing to the UBC community, but who would not be able to attend without significant financial assistance. Your support for the Blue & Gold Centennial Indigenous Scholars Award will help make education more accessible for outstanding First Nations, Inuit and Métis students.

Enhance the experience of Indigenous students by supporting the First Nations House of Learning

The First Nations House of Learning (FNHL) strives to make the university a more accessible and inclusive environment for Indigenous students, by collaborating with other units on campus to provide programming, resources, and events.

Support Truth and Reconciliation

Support learning and dialogue about Canada’s history of residential schools and access to important related records at The Indian Residential School and Dialogue Centre (IRSHDC). The IRSHDC is a culturally-informed, Survivor-centred space working in service of Indigenous communities.

Support programming and services for Indigenous students at the Okanagan campus

Indigenous students at the UBCO campus are supported through Indigenous Programs and Services or the First Steps bursary.
