About Barry You Fay Dong
Barry was born on September 25, 1954 in Hong Kong before immigrating to Port Alice, British Columbia with his family in 1956. Starting from humble beginnings, he faced many socio-economic challenges in his youth. Despite this adversity, he persevered by acquiring a job at the local pulp mill and eventually securing admission to UBC.
Barry completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976 and his law degree at the University of British Columbia in 1979. Most recently a partner with Harris & Co. LLP, over his 40-year career, Barry established himself as a leading lawyer in the areas of labour, employment, human rights, and administrative law. Barry was active as counsel in the film and television industry and was instrumental in its growth from its beginnings in 1987 to the present. Barry was also active in the construction industry, one of the largest business sectors in the province. Barry was well known for his unique ability to bring opposing parties together at the bargaining table. He believed that mutual respect and trust were paramount for long-lasting union and employer relationships.
Barry appeared for producers, construction owners, associations, and contractors in arbitration panels, labour board hearings, human rights tribunals, and in court, and advised on bargaining and strategic planning. As a testament to his depth of industry knowledge, he was often called upon by his clients to give private presentations and workshops on topical workplace issues affecting their sectors. Barry was also appointed by the Minister of Labour as the employer representative on the 2018 Labour Relations Code review panel.
Barry was a hard-working lawyer, devoted family man, and a friend to many. He will be remembered for his honesty, integrity, generosity, and kindness.
Taken from us on May 8, 2021 after a long and valiant fight with cancer, Barry’s family would like to raise a minimum of $250,000 by October 31, 2021 for an award in his honour.
