About Brian Truscott
After graduating from UBC with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in English, Brian began his career at the Vancouver Courier, where he worked as a reporter from 1988 to 1994. A move to Hong Kong saw him reporting for the Eastern Express newspaper, and then Finance Asia magazine. From 1998 to 2010, he was variously a columnist, reporter and editor with the Dow Jones Newswires financial news service, in Singapore, London and Vancouver.
He won a number of awards as a writer, including the Douglas Bankson Scholarship for Writing while at UBC.
Brian’s friends and family remember him as an inquisitive man with a wry sense of humour and an abiding passion for his profession.
The impact of your support
The Brian Truscott Memorial Award in Business Journalism has been established by Gabriella Stern, a close friend and colleague of Brian’s. This annually-funded $1,000 award will be offered to an outstanding student enrolled in the UBC Graduate School of Journalism with an interest in business journalism. This is a fitting tribute to Brian, who had a deep passion for the field of journalism.
Your gift will honour Brian’s legacy and provide invaluable financial support for students as they pursue their journalism studies. $5,000 has already been committed, which will allow the award to be given for five years. When the fund reaches $30,000, it will be endowed, so that the award can be offered to deserving students in perpetuity. Please make a gift to help the award reach endowment.
