I was a visitor student from Germany spending two semesters at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon in 2001/02. As a big hockey fan I went to a lot of games of the U of S Huskies. Soon I became familiar with the names of the players, be it women or men. I recognised Laura as one of the goalies. We both lived on campus but unfortunately never talked to each other. Every now and then I find myself googling some of the former players, just to see where life has taken them. It was with deep sadness that I learnt of Laura's passing last night. What a tough break. From all I've read about her, having Laura as a friend must have been a true privilege. If there's one thing we should learn for the future it is to be upfront about all things mental illness, make it OK to talk about it and show our support to all those suffering from depression or bipolar. My thoughts are with Laura's family, loved ones and friends.
It was less than a year ago when Laura spent a month in our clinic providing medical care to many of our clinic patients. Her diligence, professionalism and genuine care for her patients was remarkable. We continue to be reminded of Laura every time we see her electronic signature in the charts of patients she cared for. Our profession has lost one heck of an individual. My thoughts continue to be with Laura's family, hockey team mates and med school colleagues.
