About Matthew Jackson

Matthew Jackson was born in Brixham, Devon, England. His family emigrated to Canada in March 1968, moving first to Calgary, AB and subsequently to Victoria, BC in 1969. Matthew went to school in Oak Bay in Victoria, attending Monterey Elementary, Glenlyon Norfolk and Oak Bay High Schools. He later obtained a B.Sc in Kinesiology at the University of Victoria and continued his studies at the University of British Columbia, where he graduated in with a B.Sc in Physical Therapy in 1992. Matthew continued his training in physiotherapy throughout his career with numerous courses in orthopedics and manual therapy. He worked at Cook-Pandora Physiotherapy for many years, before joining Rebalance at its opening in 2013.

Matthew was involved in sports throughout his life. He swam competitively as a child and later swam for the University of Victoria. He was also active throughout his life in surfing, climbing, hiking, skiing and road-riding. He died suddenly in the ocean off a place that he loved, Long Beach in Tofino, doing a sport he also loved, surfing.

Matthew will be missed greatly by many people, including his mother, Barbara; his sister, Deborah; his daughter, Naysa; Naysa’s mother, Dawn Harris; his fiancée, Wendy Irish; his extended family in England and abroad; and his large network of friends.

  • Matthew was a positive and pleasant person, and a very knowledgeable physio therapist. He was my physio for many years, and I enjoyed listening to his stories and laughing together. I’ll miss him.

  • After moving back to Victoria, where I grew up, and needing a physio, I asked my friend Jack Taunton, who said, you want Rebalance without a doubt. Best place. I called. Matthew was the first physio who had an opening. I saw him several times for that injury and later several times for other injuries. Positive, effective, and a really nice guy. After helping me immensely for a bad tendon injury to one foot, and getting ready for a trip to Portugal where I would be walking a lot, he gave great tips and even provided his email address should I need any help once there. I did not, but was so grateful to Matt. I was very saddened to hear of his death and at such a young age. Condolences to his loved ones. I will never forget him.

  • I'm so grateful to have known you for many years. I will sure remember the laughter and fun from previous years. I'm thankful for the reunion when I joined Rebalance and sat right next to you. Missing you. RIP Matt.

  • Matt was always happy and fun to be around. Together we watched and timed our daughters during competitive swimming. We also swam together on the "parents relay" giving our children some comic relief. We won "gold" one year in Nanaimo with Matt being our anchor man on our relay team. At the office I miss you coming by for a chat and appreciate your excellent care of patients.

  • Matt - we all will miss you and I will miss your cheeky grin and laugh when England even get close to the All Blacks in a rugby game. You would wear that English jersey and smirk - hard to forget. Your clinical acumen and wonderful quirky personality will be something I will miss and every time I walk into Big Blue I look sadly at your desk - fly like an eagle buddy -love you always. Stefan
