I audited Dr. Hodgson's acoustics class during my hygiene studies. I love music and sounds, but up until then, I was not aware of how much of an effect my surroundings had on what I was hearing, and what an effect it has on communicating. One of the most startling revelations for me at the time was the effect of snow on ambient noise levels... whenever I noticed the stillness and quietness of a snowy day, I remembered, and will continue to remember, Dr. Hodgson.
Murray responded to a call from a group of Sechelt citizens whose 25 year old battle with night noise from the Lehigh Hanson aggregate mine in our small town required some help with measuring noise levels. He kindly loaned us a sound meter so we could take measurements and record the statistics. Had I known he was ill I would never have imposed on his generous offer to help but he was so forthcoming with advice as well that I felt he was genuinely concerned for the outcome. So sorry not to have kept in touch over the last months of his life. His family has lost a tremendously kind member.
