Paul Jubinville was born in Kamloops, BC on September 12, 1991. He was a gentle soul, who became a wonderful young man, gifted with intelligence, incredible wit and a keen sense of humour.

He grew up in a great neighbourhood with his parents Jeannine and Rick and his younger brother Sean. He was fortunate to be surrounded by aunts and uncles, cousins and grandparents. His friends were lifelong friends, many of whom he started kindergarten with. He loved to play games, whether they were board games or video games—anything that involved some kind of strategy. He also enjoyed playing soccer, rock climbing and snowboarding.

Paul was into his final year of the Electrical Engineering Program at UBC’s Okanagan campus when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. He survived almost a year. During this time he underwent surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. It was a difficult time, but he remained brave. He accepted this disease with grace. In his final months, he was able to give back by tutoring high school students in Math and Physics at Thompson Rivers University. He never gave up as his body slowly failed him.

Paul would always say, “Life—it is what it is.” For Paul and his family that means not to focus too much on the things that we cannot change in life, whether that be the past or the future, but to focus on today and to make the best of it.

Paul was standing at the beginning of a new path in his journey of life. We are grateful to have had him in our lives. He is loved and missed by many.

In memory of Paul’s life, family and friends have created the Paul Jubinville Memorial Bursary in Engineering. It is offered to a fourth-year electrical engineering student in the Faculty of Applied Science at UBC’s Okanagan campus.
