About Quang Minh Khong

Quang Minh Khong was an alumnus of UBC Sauder, who passed away on February 26, 2016, at the age of 30. He grew up in a full household with loving parents, Du Dang and Tan Khong, and three younger siblings; Nam, Dong, and Hailey. As siblings growing up, they enjoyed watching and playing sports together; playing old school video games; and, of course, making fun of each other. Being the oldest, Quang always had to be the responsible one. He stood up for his siblings whenever necessary and paved the path of success for his younger brothers and sister.

Quang’s middle name, Minh, means “intelligent and bright.” Quang had a very curious mind and was always trying to learn something new. You would find him reading a book, watching National Geographic, or learning a new language. Quang was also an avid sports fan; watching and playing all type of sports such as soccer, basketball and baseball. With that said, his absolute favourite sport was football. Sunday Night Football was always an important occasion in the house.

Quang had a variety of jobs throughout his life. After graduating from Sauder, Quang worked at TD Bank, Royal Bank of Canada and BC Assessment. His most significant job was a summer job at Blockbuster Video, where he met the love of his life, Kim. Quang and Kim would spend the next ten years together, joining in marriage on a beautiful summer day in 2014 at the Stanley Park Pavilion. They would go on to see the world together; exploring Greece, Rome, France, London, LA, and San Francisco, to name a few travel destinations. While they traveled often, they never lost sight of where home was; having bought a place together in East Vancouver, minutes away from where they had first met at Blockbuster.

Quang was an ambitious person who always strived to do his best. With his desire to succeed and work ethic, Quang obtained his Bachelor of Commerce in 2007, a Diploma in Accounting in 2009, and finally a post-graduate certificate in Real Property Valuation in 2013. His achievements at UBC inspired his younger sister, Hailey, to complete her post-education at UBC as well. Throughout his four years at UBC, Quang was involved in various clubs, such as the Finance Club, Golf Club, Fitness Club, as well as being the Vice President Finance of the UBC Consulting Club. Quang’s love for sports was also demonstrated in his involvement in numerous intramural activities. He played futsal, soccer, basketball, and participated in UBC’s Day of the Longboat and Storm the Wall. Being the oldest child in the family made it easy for Quang to take on the role of a mentor through the UBC Commerce’s Mentor Program, where he mentored 1st year students as they transitioned into university.

Quang was well respected in the community and loved by his friends and peers. He inspired many throughout his days at UBC, encouraging those around him to achieve their full potential. His most admirable trait was his ability to connect people; often through organizing activities such as football on the weekends or foosball at the Law Building the night before a major exam. Quang had a great sense of humor and people were always drawn to him. After graduating from UBC, Quang maintained many close friendships with his peers from Sauder and by frequently organizing group sports activities, he became instrumental in developing a community of young professionals in Vancouver.

In February of 2016, Quang lost his battle against liver cancer. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family. He will be greatly missed, but fondly remembered by all who knew him.
