About Rick Kornelsen
Richard (Rick) Arnold Henry Abram Kornelsen (1966-2025) grew up in Lethbridge, Alberta, and pursued his passion for science through studies at the Briercrest Bible College, the University of Lethbridge and Western University, where he earned a Master’s in Neuroscience.
Rick joined UBC in 1997 and spent nearly three decades supporting groundbreaking work at the Pacific Parkinson Research Centre and the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health. As a senior technician and lab manager, he became known for his expertise, mentorship and unwavering dedication to students and colleagues.
Beyond the lab, Rick was a lover of books, trivia and football and enjoyed playing softball and dodgeball, riding his bike and spending time with friends and family. His warmth, generosity and dependability left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.
Rick’s resilience was evident after his pancreatic cancer diagnosis in December 2024. He continued to bring positivity, humour and kindness to his work and relationships until the end of his life.
Rick is remembered as a devoted son, brother, cousin and friend. He showed those around him how to live fully and with heart, and he will be deeply missed.
