From East Vancouver to biochemistry breakthroughs

The Schulich Leaders Scholarship opened the door for Mohammed Al-Seragi to pursue his passion for biochemistry and impactful research.

Growing up in East Vancouver, Mohammed Al-Seragi saw UBC as more than just a nearby campus—it was a gateway to new possibilities.

“UBC was always close by, but it represented something bigger,” says Mohammed, “An institution where different fields intersect and where I could grow academically and personally.”

Awarded to him in 2021, the Schulich Leaders Scholarship was pivotal for Mohammed’s journey to UBC.

“Receiving the scholarship meant I could focus fully on my education and extracurriculars without the weight of financial worries,” he explains.

Mohammed’s love for science started in high school, where he excelled in both chemistry and biology. Biochemistry was the natural next step: “I was always fascinated by studying life at a molecular level. It felt like the perfect way to combine my interests in biological and chemical sciences.”

Throughout his time at UBC, Mohammed has immersed himself in his learning and development. He served in the Science Undergraduate Society and the Biochemistry Student Association, and he participated in the Research Experience (REX) program, which encourages students to design, conduct, and present original research.

One of his most notable research projects involves modelling a molecule that could selectively remove lead from the human body—something with huge potential benefits for public health.

“Lead accumulation is a major issue because it mimics calcium and embeds itself in our bones, making it difficult to eliminate,” Mohammed explains.

The support of the Schulich Leaders Scholarship has also allowed Mohammed to explore experiential learning opportunities, including co-op placements that provide hands-on research experience.

“I’m currently on a co-op term at the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, which has given me the chance to apply my knowledge in a real-world setting,” he says. These experiences have reinforced his desire to pursue an MD/PhD program, bridging clinical applications with innovative biochemistry research.

Reflecting on the impact of the Schulich award, Mohammed shares, “It was life-changing—not just for me but for my family. I remember the day I told my parents—they were overjoyed! It removed a significant barrier, allowing me to dive fully into my university experience.”

Beyond academics, Mohammed enjoys hiking and running, balancing the rigours of biochemistry with outdoor activities that keep him grounded. He also finds inspiration in listening to podcasts, appreciating the diverse perspectives and pursuit of knowledge they present.

The Schulich Leaders Scholarship, Mohammed says, is more than financial support—it’s an opportunity to join a community of innovators across STEM fields.

“It cultivates leadership and collaboration among people from varied backgrounds, setting the stage for breakthroughs that happen when different disciplines come together.”
