1976 Bursary

The cost of a law degree has increased dramatically since we attended law school 50 years ago. First-Year tuition for the next academic year is now $14,517.44; when we were students in 1976, tuition was only $506! Today’s law students face financial pressures that many of us could scarcely have imagined back when we began our legal education.

Almost all of us graduates of Law ’76 were able to pay our tuition with relative ease. In addition to savings from summer jobs, many of us received financial assistance through scholarships, bursaries, grants, or student loans. Those opportunities helped make our legal careers possible, and our class bursary continues that tradition of support.

Thanks to the generosity of class members over the years, the Law Class of 1976 Bursary is now a permanent endowment. As of March 31, 2026, the endowment is valued at $64,013.91 and currently provides approximately $2,400 annually to a law student in financial need.

One of our classmates has very generously pledged a gift of $25,000 and we are encouraging every member of the Class of 1976 to contribute $500 in honour of our 50th reunion. Together, we hope to grow the endowment to $100,000. Reaching that milestone would allow the fund to provide approximately $4,000 annually to support a deserving law student.

Please consider making a gift of $500 to help build the Law Class of 1976 Endowment. If a contribution of $500 is not possible, any gift, regardless of size, will make a meaningful difference and bring us closer to our goal.

Income tax receipts will be provided by UBC for all donations made.
