In 1983, Tomas Yebes was wrongfully convicted of murdering his two sons. Seeking justice, Tomas followed the advice of his nephew, a UBC law student who encouraged Tomas to connect with the UBC Innocence Project—a unique experiential learning opportunity where passionate law students come together and review claims of wrongful conviction in British Columbia.

Nearly 40 years later, Tomas was exonerated and finally regained his freedom, thanks to the efforts of the pro bono lawyers, students and staff at the UBC Innocence Project.
Students who participate in the UBC Innocence Project dedicate themselves to exposing wrongful convictions where they have occurred and preventing injustice. Under the guidance of supervising lawyers, they review materials from the original investigation to the final appeal, looking to uncover potential miscarriages of justice. By bringing these cases to the Minister of Justice for consideration, they are restoring hope and freedom to the innocent.
These students play a transformative role in the lives of those they help by tirelessly investigating wrongful convictions and advocating for justice. By supporting the Tomas Yebes Award in Law, you are investing in a future where the criminal legal system is fair, compassionate and equitable for all.
