Dr. John Patrick McConkey, MD’69 lived his life with deep care and empathy for others. Throughout his 35-year career as an orthopaedic surgeon, teacher and innovator, he dedicated himself to helping athletes return to the sport they love after an injury, while guiding UBC orthopaedic residents and sports medicine fellows with his spirit of excellence and innovation. His commitment to advancing the field of sports medicine has left an indelible mark on the medical community and beyond.
Pat joined the UBC Department of Orthopaedics in 1977, bringing a team-first mentality to his work. A respected leader within the Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre at UBC, he took a hands-on approach to designing the rehabilitation and recovery programs of athletes, including members of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team.
Internationally recognized for his expertise in treating knee injuries, Pat generously shared his knowledge, helping trainees and clinicians appreciate the importance of balancing careful examination and diagnostic testing. He championed the integration of teaching, research and patient care, which led him to help develop the UBC Division of Athletic Injuries (now Arthroscopy).
Your gift to the Dr. J.P. McConkey Visiting Scholar Fund honours Pat’s legacy by supporting an annual visiting scholar that will offer trainees a unique opportunity to learn from global leaders in orthopaedic sports medicine about groundbreaking discoveries and patient care innovations to optimize treatment and recovery across the spectrum of sports.
Visiting scholars open a world of possibilities for students by fostering new relationships and unlocking invaluable opportunities for knowledge-sharing and learning.
The McConkey Family has generously started this memorial campaign in honour of Pat with a gift of $100,000 to establish the Dr. J.P. McConkey Visiting Scholar Endowment Fund. The full amount of your donation will go directly into this fund to help us reach our goal of $300,000. All donors will receive a tax receipt upon making a gift. If you have any questions or would like to discuss other methods of contributing to the Dr. J.P. McConkey Visiting Scholar Fund, please contact Olivia Peters, Associate Director of Development, at olivia.peters@ubc.ca.
Give now to honour Pat’s legacy of person-centered, performance-oriented care. Together, let’s empower UBC Orthopaedic learners with world-leading knowledge of both the practical realities and future possibilities of sports injury recovery.
