Bimema Family Award
in Teacher Education

Faculty of Education

Support equity and access for Black students in UBC's Teacher Education program.

Dr. Bathseba Opini, in collaboration with Dean Blye Frank, created this fund to honor, appreciate and reciprocate her family’s tradition of educators who have deep commitment and passion for education in their community.

UBC Faculty of Education stands firm and united with those impacted by the systemic violence and anti-Black racism against Black communities in Canada.

The UBC Faculty of Education is committed to supporting Black student success and excellence. Dr. Bathseba Opini, of the Department of Educational Studies, and Dean of the Faculty of Education, Dr. Blye Frank, have taken the lead in establishing the Bimema Family Award in Teacher Education to honour, appreciate and reciprocate her family’s tradition of educators who have deep commitment and passion for education in their community. The Faculty of Education invites your support and we hope you will join us in this initiative.

Gifts will be directed to the Bimema Family Award in Teacher Education, with final decisions on the award description and student eligibility to be made in consultation with the Faculty of Education.

  • Everything we do in the classroom gives children a message. A powerful message. It’s not always what the teacher is teaching, so we have to think about the ways we are empowering children or we’re destroying children … Give them a curriculum that will help them love themselves.”
