By 2020, brain diseases and disorders will overtake heart disease and cancer as the leading cause of death and disability in Canada.

Affecting one in seven Canadians, from early childhood through to old age, these debilitating conditions impact not only individuals, but families and communities as well. At the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health, leading UBC researchers across the fields of neuroscience, mental health, and addiction medicine are united under one roof to foster a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach to solving some of the brain’s greatest mysteries.

This “whole brain” approach to research is unique. It encompasses both a new, customized facility and a new philosophy. Traditionally, neurologic and psychiatric disorders have been treated separately, with clinicians and researchers often having little interaction. By bringing the disciplines together and integrating patient care with research, we are creating unique opportunities to collaborate and share in research and discovery. The interactions that take place, in the labs and hallways of the Centre for Brain Health, will further our shared goal of understanding how a healthy brain works, and generating innovative approaches to prevent and treat brain diseases and disorders.

Donate today to help support UBC scientists in the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health as they continue to progress toward life-enhancing discoveries.

Researchers are making great strides in understanding our brains and they need your help to translate this understanding into better clinical care for people living with brain disease. Your gift to the Centre for Brain Health could improve treatments for dementia, alleviate the symptoms of Parkinson’s, or enable state-of-the-art brain imaging technology to bring brain research to new heights.
