One day, this is how all cities will run. Help set a new standard.

UBC is the world’s #1 university on climate action and is positioned to become a testbed for an integrated energy system that could change forever how cities function.

On UBC’s Vancouver campus, 400 hectares will be converted into a renewable energy district that links energy, transportation, telecommunications and urban design. The district will place Canadian innovation at the forefront of the clean energy movement setting the standard for renewable electricity and hydrogen fuel to create sustainable, low-carbon economies for Canada and the rest of the world.

Under the direction of Walter Mérida, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and lead of MéridaLabs, the $20-million project, located at the corner of Wesbrook Mall and Thunderbird Boulevard, will transform a city block into a smart-energy district. The site will feature green hydrogen produced from water and energy from a solar array, bi-directional electric vehicle charging systems, and an integrated digital infrastructure to oversee operations.

The first of its kind in the world

The project is the first and only of its kind in the world, and will facilitate the development of innovative, integrated solutions that are simply not possible anywhere else. By accelerating the process on UBC’s Vancouver campus, climate solutions can be developed, adapted and deployed in a risk-tolerant environment and scaled-up for communities, cities and regions.

Your gift will help UBC transform a whole city block into a smart-energy district that will launch next-generation technologies to accelerate the global transition to low-carbon economies within ten years.
